A teen who was 13 when he sodomized and assaulted a 6-year-old neighbor has been sentenced to 60 years in prison.
Sherman Burnett was sentenced Thursday. He had earlier pleaded guilty after he was certified to stand trial as an adult. He was the youngest inmate ever housed at the St. Louis County jail.
The victim was found more than 13 hours after she disappeared. It happened in November 2005.
The girl's babysitter had dropped her off in front of her home on Rhea Street in Spanish Lake. For the next 13 hours, the child became the subject of an area-wide search, including SARAA and Amber Alerts.
Around 5:30 a.m. the next day, St. Louis County Police found the child semi-conscious in the backyard of a neighbor's home, 200 feet from the girl's house. She was badly beaten and cold.
Investigators believe she had crawled from some nearby train tracks where the assault may have occurred.
At the sentencing Thursday, the judge said the victim wrote that she wanted her attacker to spend 60 years in prison, which is what the judge decided the sentence would be.
The sentence includes 20 years for assault, 20 years for kidnapping, 10 years for sodomy, and 10 years for attempted sodomy.
The sentences will be consecutive, and Burnett would be eligible for parlole after 51 years in prison.
Burnett's attorneys had asked that he be placed in a program for violent juveniles. The judge rejected that request. (News - Law) Views:

they did my man like Bigger Thomas (NATIVE SON)
This is sad for both the family of the victim and the family of the defendant. It was a brutal crime and if it was my daughter, i would probably want him dead. So jail may be a better alternative for this young man.
Both sides has lost in this situation. My prayers are with the 6 year old little girl and also the little boy. People it's time for us to wake up!
I agree both side have lost in this one. But one life is lost, the 13yr old will never recover from 60 yr in a adult prison. They need to focus on who offend him and correcting the problem. Just like she needs help to recover from this tragic event. He also needs help, so both children can be healed and prison will only make matters worse.
This is really unfair, there are Adult Offenders (Child Molesters) getting 5yr or less for being repeat offenders. An eye for an eye is not the answer! What is this world coming to?
He's 13 years old and yes he knows right from wrong but I agree that he should be punished but come on now 60 YEARS!, what im saying is people are out her killing eachother and they are barely getting double digits!.

i feel sorry...for both!!!
No matter what happened the fact is hes still a child and obviously needs help. Are we forgetting that?? What about the babysitter? Isnt she party at fault? How could you leave a 6 year old in front of the house alone? 60 years in prison? That judge should be disbarred for insanity! The girl was not killed! If anything the 13 year old should be sent away for an intervention. Prison will do nothing but make him worse. This story is just too sad.
I agree, this is ridiculous. 60 years is way to many for a crime committed to a child by a child. The babysitter is guilty of contributory negligence, because she should have made sure the baby was safely in the house before leaving her. The judge is wrong to let the child choose the punishment for her offender. Adults do not get this right for their offenders. I wonder if there is a way to appeal this decision.
This is sad and I'm praying for the little girl. The little boy need some kind of intervention. Still we don't know what his real state of mind is. Maybe the little girl family encouraged her to say that number. I can imagine how mad they are. I'm just looking at the picture of the 13 year old and seeing that he could be a serial rapist in the future. Kind of like a bad seed born and nothing can be done about it.
